Should I hire an estate planning attorney to draft my will?

Return to FAQ Videos

Transcript:

You would hire an attorney to write your will as [opposed] to drafting it yourself, for a few different reasons. One being, that you want to ensure that the will is properly executed. New York has a very specific statute that dictates exactly how the will should be signed and who it should be signed by. Another really important reason to having a will done by an attorney is that the attorney can recommend certain ways to distribute your assets and certain estate planning strategies for you to use in order to ensure that your goals and your wishes about your estate plan are ultimately carried out after your death.

I’ve worked with a lot of clients that have a lot of wishes and desires and they don’t know how to put it down on paper themselves so when you sit down with an experienced estate planning attorney, we can draft very specific provisions in a will that will ultimately get the client to where their goal is.
